Code of Conduct For GlobalScots

The GlobalScot network is an altruistic, values-driven international network founded on giving back time, expertise and insights to help others free of charge. We have a shared vision of helping Scotland – its businesses, its economy and its communities – to thrive.

To ensure the continued success of the GlobalScot network, we require all GlobalScots to follow the Code of Conduct set out in this document. This Code is based on the principles that have been at the heart of our GlobalScot network since it was formed in 2001.

For clarity, within this Code of Conduct, the terms “we/our/us”, refers to Scottish Enterprise,  which is responsible for managing and organising the GlobalScot network; “GlobalScot(s)/you/your” refers to business leaders who volunteer to support Scotland’s economic success, through the sharing of their experiences, insights and recommendations with individuals representing Scottish organisations, referred to as “users seeking GlobalScot support”. Collectively you and your fellow GlobalScots form “the GlobalScot network”.

There is a separate Code of Conduct for users seeking GlobalScot support, which can be found here.

Use the GlobalScot network to support the development of the Scottish economy

The GlobalScot network is an international business network committed to supporting Scotland’s economic success, through the shared experiences, and expertise of its members. It is not a direct business development or selling network and should not be used for political lobbying.

Ensure your membership of the GlobalScot network is for the right reasons

GlobalScots are influential business leaders based in international markets around the world, who volunteer their time to support Scotland’s economic vision. They are passionate about helping Scottish companies to access the knowledge, skills and connections that our GlobalScots can offer.

As a GlobalScot, you commit to sharing your expertise to help others and to give your time for free, with the aim of supporting economic growth in Scotland. There should be no expectation of personal, professional, or financial gain.

Give your time to support GlobalScot activity

Being a GlobalScot is an active role and you’ll be expected to participate where you can. Keeping your GlobalScot profile up to date and relevant means that other users can clearly identify your skills and expertise and target requests appropriately.

As a GlobalScot, you are free to manage any requests you receive, to decide which types of businesses you work with and how many requests you work on at a time. You can ask our GlobalScot administration team to temporarily pause new requests if you know you cannot offer support for a certain period of time. However, if we notice that you have not accepted any requests or responded to invites for 12 months, we might get in touch to see how we can help you to increase your engagement or discuss if you still have the time to support the GlobalScot network. If you are no longer able to participate in GlobalScot activity, please let us know and we can update our records to remove you from the network.

Post appropriate content on the GlobalScot website

The GlobalScot website – and in particular the Noticeboard – is a place to ask genuine questions, share insights and start conversations. As detailed in our Terms and Conditions, we want to ensure that this is a spam-free platform, so you should not use the website to advertise your company, services or products, nor to share content that is not relevant to the community.

The GlobalScot website should not be used to buy or sell goods and services unless clearly and specifically invited to do so by our GlobalScot team.

You must adhere to the Terms and Conditions which set out the acceptable use of the GlobalScot website and which may be varied from time to time.

Be respectful in your engagements as part your GlobalScot role

You should work with Scottish organisations and Scottish Enterprise staff in a courteous and professional manner. Respect each other’s time, contributions, and opinions, both in real life and on social media platforms, where collectively we all help to uphold a strong and united representation of Scotland.

Do not bring the GlobalScot network or Scottish Enterprise into disrepute

We may consider that you have breached this Code of Conduct if, in our opinion, you bring the GlobalScot network or Scottish Enterprise (including Scottish Development International in overseas markets) into disrepute, including for example, through the creation or publication of social media content which we deem to be inappropriate.

What happens if I don’t follow the Code of Conduct?

To maintain the value and ethos of the GlobalScot network, we may remove or suspend GlobalScots where the Code of Conduct has been broken or if we consider that your ongoing membership will undermine or cause damage to the reputation of Scottish Enterprise, Scottish Development International (in overseas markets) or the GlobalScot network.

Incidents where the Code of Conduct may have been broken will be investigated by Scottish Enterprise staff responsible for the GlobalScot network and where appropriate (for example where the alleged incident creates a reputational risk) will be escalated to Scottish Enterprise leadership. If the Code of Conduct is deemed to have been broken, you will be invited to a discussion with us on the next steps which may include removal or suspension from the GlobalScot network.

Annual review of the GlobalScot network

Being a GlobalScot is an active role, and we review membership each year to make sure the GlobalScot network stays vibrant and responsive to the needs of the business ecosystem in Scotland. It is vital that GlobalScots keep their profiles and contact details up to date. If we are unable to contact you, your membership will be suspended until we are able to do so. Otherwise, if your circumstances change and you're no longer able to play an active role as a GlobalScot, then you may also be removed from the network.

We welcome feedback.

Regular feedback helps us to improve the GlobalScot network to make sure we are providing value to all users. We’ll sometimes ask you to review your experience of the GlobalScot network, whether it’s in relation to an engagement with a specific business user or participation at an event. This is not mandatory, but it can be very helpful.

If you have any concerns, including regarding others’ adherence to the Code of Conduct, please feel free to report this to the GlobalScot team at globalscot@scotent.co.uk .
